A Successful DUT Autumn Graduation Season

A Successful DUT Autumn Graduation Season

“When it rains but doesn’t pour, it is often a sign of all the blessings heading your way,” said Nomusa Jiyane to her son Mvelo Siyaya who graduated Cum laude and a Deans Merit Award.

The rain did not stop celebrations and excitement of the graduates and their parents at the last day of the Durban University of Technology’s autumn graduation ceremonies. Although the weather had been in favour of the other graduation ceremonies held in Pietermaritzburg and Durban this autumn, it was the opposite for the final day. However, parents and students’ positivity and joy were not daunted by the weather conditions.

“Rain is just a sign that there are more graduation ceremonies coming my way. Rain is a symbol that the heavens have approved this day as ours. We have worked hard and today is the period of harvesting,” said Thobani Msomi.
The fashionable trendy, traditional outfits were also the order of the week. Ululating, struggle songs and chanting was some of the noise that could be heard from the hall the entire week at every session. Students were seen using the stage as their dance floor as some performed traditional dances and various other dances such as amavosho (a street dance performed during parties or street bashes). Grannies who walked on walking sticks suddenly forgot that they were dependent on their walking sticks as they celebrated their grandchildren’s successes.

“I never thought I would see the day that my grandchild graduates. When her mother passed away I feared that I might also pass on before she graduates, but God has granted me the opportunity to celebrate her achievement. I cannot thank the heavens enough for this day,” said Mrs Sazi Khanyeza.

This season, DUT graduation numbers increased by 378 and more females than males graduated.
