Academic Excellence Recognised

The Durban University of Technology’s Department of Food and Nutrition Consumer Sciences hosted its annual awards ceremony where students’ achievements were honoured.

The ceremony was held at the Department’s Rendezvous Restaurant, Steve Biko Campus, on Tuesday, 27 October 2015.

The awards recognise students’ academic and practical achievements from first year through to BTech level.

“We are proud of our academic standards and the achievements of those who have graduated,” said Susan Vermeer, Department of Food and Nutrition Consumer Sciences Head of Department. “It is the passion and dedication of the staff to students’ development in the food and nutrition field that lays the foundation to their future achievements,” said Vermeer.

She also said the Department strives for excellence and professionalism and these qualities have been recognised by industry which continues to collaborate with the Department for industry projects. This year (2015), students and staff worked with Tiger Brands, Roberston’s and Wonderbag Company.

“I feel very proud of myself for receiving an award,” said Fezile Nzama, a third-year student who received an award. “I love dealing with food, it’s (food) what inspired me to study Food and Nutrition. In five years time, I see myself owning a hotel and having a recipe development company,” said Nzama.
