Writing to Learn & Learning to Write

Durban University of Technology (DUT) has six Writing Centres which are spread across six campuses, namely Steve Biko, ML Sultan, Ritson and City Campus in Durban, Indumiso and Riverside in Pietermaritzburg. In total, the DUT Writing Centres have recruited and trained 42 tutors who will be ready to assist students and staff with the following:

  • strategies for writing in different disciplines;
  • assignments for humanities and science-related academic courses;
  • reading, researching and referencing;
  • proposals (academic and business);
  • dissertations;
  • articles, book chapters and books for publication;
  • business and professional writing (curriculum vitaes; e-mails, motivational letters, memos, etc);
  • creative writing (www.africanstorybook.org);
  • course syllabi; etc.

 

What you can expect at the Writing Centre:

  • Tutors will guide, advise and support you, with the aim of developing your writing skills and confidence.
  • Tutors will offer support and writing companionship, but will not edit or write for you.
  • Tutors will listen and help you to put together your ideas and thoughts.
  • In all instances, you will make the decisions and direct your writing.
