Refrain from Drugs and Alcohol- Students Urged

The Durban University of Technology’s Isolempilo Campus Health Clinic recently hosted the National Department of Social Department’s Alcohol Free Campaign which aims to create awareness on substance abuse as well as prevent and manage alcohol and drug use in the country.

The campaign was tied together the with the University’s Faculty of Applied Sciences’ Sports Day which was held at the Fred Crookes Sport Centre, DUT Steve Biko Campus. Non-governmental organisations such as loveLife were also present at the event.

“I think the message (of the campaign) was able to reach students today”, said Isolempilo Campus Health Clinic Manager, Sooriagandhi Wardthen. “The reason we decided to partner with the Faculty of Applied Sciences was that we wanted students to come in large numbers. Going forward, we will tie our events with sporting events to lure the audience. They (students) also received some kind of memorabilia to take home. Whether it’s a hat, t-shirt or pencil, each one has a message on it and each and every time they use those items they will be reminded that we are trying to promote this campaign”, Wardthen said.

Faith Mamathe, Social Work Policy Manager at National Department of Social Development, urged students to focus on their studies and refrain from drinking alcohol while they are still studying as this may be detrimental to their studies. “Stay away from drugs and alcohol,” Mamathe told students.
