All Set for the Applied Sciences’ Lecture Series

The Faculty of Applied Sciences at DUT will hold its Dean’s Lecture Series to be delivered by Professor Ruan Wei, the Dean of the International Education College and Director of the International Student Office, Shanghai Maritime University.

The Lecture, which is a joint effort between the Faculty Applied Sciences and the DUT Maritime Studies Department, will be held on Thursday, 15 September 2016, at the DUT Department of Maritime Studies (Class 514), S6 level 5, Gate 2, Steve Biko Campus from 12h00 to 13h30.

Professor Wei, who will be discussing the development of Maritime Curriculum under STCW and International Maritime Practice, has dedicated himself to maritime education and training, maritime safety and pollution prevention conventions, maritime safety management as well as maritime policies and management.

Professor Wei has served as the Dean of Continuing Education College and Director of Shanghai Seafarer Training at the Shanghai Maritime University between 2005 and 2015. In September 2015, he was appointed as Dean of the International Education College and Director of international Student Office of Shanghai Maritime University. He has also accomplished a series of research projects delegated by the Ministry of Transport and CMSA such as “Strategy research for the development of Chinese Seafarer services”, “Research for the revision of Chinese Maritime Law” as well as “Research on the Aero-nautical search and Rescue system in China”. He has published a range of outputs such as “The implications of shipping laws and practices upon onboard operations – an aspect of life-long learning for seafarers”, “Comparisons between various search and rescue (SAR) systems and their implications to the development of Chinese Maritime SAR system”, “Controlling risks at sea – indications of mutual insurance upon safety onboard”, “Promoting maritime safety by legislation – a review and discussion on the obligations and rights of shipmasters”, “Probing into the acquisition and maintenance of high quality seafarers”, “A study of Chinese MET management system”, “Key remarks on the conformity of rules for the competency examination certification of Chinese seafarers with 2010 STCW amendments” and “Meeting the requirements and development of MET”.
