Cum Laude and Dean’s Merit for DUT’s Madwe, Despite Many Challenges

Cum Laude and Dean’s Merit for DUT’s Madwe, Despite Many Challenges

For the small town student from Harding in KwaZulu-Natal and lecturer, having to juggle work and consistent studying are the hardships Mziwendoda Madwe had to face in order to obtain his Degree of Master of Accounting.

The current lecturer in Financial Accounting at Majuba TVET College graduated with a Degree of Master of Accounting, obtaining cum laude and as well as the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award for her academic excellence.
Madwe said he is very excited about his achievement because the cum laude and Dean’s Merit awards were not something he had expected to achieve.

“I must admit this came as a huge shock to me, but I’m really excited to see that my ‘can do’ attitude has made me achieve this,” he said elatedly.
The biggest challenge he had to endure was having to balance being a lecturer and a student at the same time. “It has not been an easy journey, one has to study long hours and you sometimes sleep at 5am in the morning. You have to go to work at 7am, but what I can say, my determination in spite of adversity was the key to my success,” said Madwe.

One of the major, contributing factors in his success, is his dream of becoming an academic researcher in his field of Accounting, and under the supervision on Prof P E Green and Prof L J Stainbank, Madwe said their supervision made him believe his dream will come true, as their guidance had helped him to produce excellent work thus far.

His advice to students who have big dreams like he does is to work hard because the root of true achievement lies in the will to become the best one can be.

“I believe that the difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength or lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will. My excellent achievements are potentially chiseled into a perfect state vision, dedication and determination. Success is a clear reflection of effort, pride and passion with which a person lives,” said Madwe.

Madwe’s future plan is to register for his PhD in Accounting and he is already working on his topic.
