Developing Staff Capacity in Online Teaching

DUT recently honoured staff members who completed courses in online teaching and facilitation with a certificate presentation held in the Vice-Chancellor’s boardroom at Milena House, DUT Steve Biko Campus.

Eighteen (18) staff members completed the Faculty Certificate in Online Teaching a course offered by the international GlobalNxt University on behalf of Manipal University.

The certificates were presented by DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Ahmed Bawa, with the DVC:Academic, Professor Nomthandazo Gwele, in attendance. Prof Bawa congratulated staff members, saying that he believed the support of technology in teaching and learning was vital to managing workloads and that he was pleased to see staff developing their expertise and resources to carry forward e-learning within the institution. He also commented that this presentation arose from the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which DUT had signed with Manipal University. The MoU was established with the intention of a reciprocal arrangement between the universities in terms of offering courses.

The Faculty Certificate in Online Teaching trained staff members in various aspects of online delivery of courses, covering course design, online facilitation, use of technology and preserving academic integrity. Certificates for two staff members completing the Facilitating Online course, a University of Cape Town Centre for Higher Education Development course delivered by e/Merge Africa, were also presented at this event. Both courses gave staff members hands-on experience of designing and facilitating a high quality online learning experience.

Staff members who completed the FCOT course were Pregalathan Reddy, Nareen Gonsalves, Thengani Ngwenya, John Jason Mellem, Graham Stewart, Mari Pete, Ursula Vooght, Sury Rajah, Nelson Munsamy, Prinavin Govender, Natalee Williams, Nirvana Rajkumar, Maud Blose, Nisha Ramlutchman, Mokgadi Makgobole, Kavita Beemsen, Hester Jackson and Bwalya Lungu.
