DISCUSSING ACADEMIC LITERACY AND STUDENTS’ NEED

The Durban University of Technology’s Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching’s (CELT) Symposium concluded with success on Friday last week (30 October 2015).

The three-day symposium, held at the DUT Ritson Campus, kicked off on Wednesday, 28 October 2015, ending on Friday (30 October 2015). The purpose of the Symposium was to share critical reflections on learning, teaching and assessment as well as key educational issues impacting on students’ success.

Topics addressed by key speakers included Academic Literacy and Students’ Needs- Proposing an Inclusive Model of Instruction.

On Friday, Dr Ursula Wingate from Kings College in London, spoke about misconceptions of academic literacy. “Academic literacy problems are frequently confused with English language problems,” she said.
