DUT Bids Farewell to its Dean of Students

It was a bitter-sweet moment when colleagues at the Durban University of Technology bid farewell to the University’s Dean of Students, Amar Singh, who announced his retirement from the University after 33 years of service.

As colleagues honoured Singh during his farewell ceremony which was held on Friday, 24 February 2017, at the Walsingham Student Resident’s hall, Singh’s reliability to his professional responsibilities was in the beam of spotlight. “Mr Amar Singh has always been a reliable colleague,” said Dr Martin Mandew, Director at the DUT Midlands Campuses. “We shared wonderful and bad times together but you must be rest assured he has immensely contributed to both the University and its students. He has done his utmost best”, said Dr Mandew.

For many years, Singh has played various roles within the University and he has played a major part in helping students with their issues. He has dedicated his time to not just being the Dean of Students, but at times became a father figure to them (students) and a support structure to staff within the Department of Student Services.

Honouring Singh, DUT Registrar, Professor Thenjiwe Meyiwa, expressed her gratitude for Singh’s services to the University. “We appreciate how you have served the University and how you were always available to provide aid and guidance to students and staff”, she said.

Singh, a father of two daughters who enjoys golf in his past time was lost for words when handed his gifts: a DUT Sports t-shirt from the University’s Sports Centre team and a portrait of himself from the entire Student Services team. “I just want to thank everyone for the times we shared together. I want to thank each and every one of you for your contribution to the Student Services unit,” said Singh.

his last day in office as Dean of Students is today (Tuesday, 28 February 2017). Malusi Nxumalo, currently Student Governance and Development Manager, has been appointed as acting Dean for Students.
