DUT CHANCELLOR’S CUP GOLF DAY RAISE FUNDS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS

DUT CHANCELLOR’S CUP GOLF DAY RAISE FUNDS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS

The Durban University of Technology Golf Club in collaboration with the Advancement and Alumni Relations department hosted the first edition of the Chancellor’s Cup Golf Day at the Royal Durban Club, Greyville, on Friday, 10 August 2018.

With the aim of fundraising and channelling funds towards the DUT Bursary Fund and Feeding Programme, the tournament had over 80 golfers from KwaZulu-Natal, teaming up against each other. The inaugural tournament began in the morning and included a Somatology session for the golfers, provided by DUT Somatology students as well as dinner in the evening.

Speaking after the tournament, The Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement, Professor Sibusiso Moyo said the tournament is part of the University’s plan to increase streams of income to support its students.

“Most of you will know that most of our fees come from tuition fees and government grants but if you think about it, there is quite a large number of students who don’t manage to get funds. There are some students who don’t qualify to get funding and some of them starve and are not able to pay fees,” said Prof Moyo.

“We have also set up the DUT Foundation. Its purpose is to raise funds which means the advancement and alumni unit is responsible for the administration of this foundation. The Chancellors Cup, which will be launched later this year, is instrumental because we connect with our alumni. I believe that as a University we have to work together, so don’t be shy to contribute your ideas,” she added.

Giving the vote of thanks, DUT Convocation Executive member, Thulile Duma concurred with Prof Moyo.  Duma said the tournament focuses on various issues that mainly affects DUT students.

“The funding generated from the tournament will help to fund our Food Security Programme. It will also provide a boost to our bursary fund, which supports students who do not qualify for NSFAS or fall under the missing middle,” added Duma.

In her address, Duma also thanked the sponsors who helped to make the inaugural tournament a success.

After the tournament, top performing golfing teams and golfers won prizes such as the Collector’s item jersey, bags, caps and vouchers at the Holiday Inn Express.
