DUT Confucius Institute Hosts New Year Concert

The second Chinese New Year Concert, hosted by the Confucius Institute at Durban University of Technology in partnership with the Consulate General of China in Durban, the KZN Department of Arts and Culture, Sport and Recreation and the Durban-Guangzhou Sister Cities Association, took place at the iZulu Theatre, Sibaya Casino recently. 

The concert highlighted the combination of art and culture by 50 young musicians from the South African KZN Youth Wind Band to celebrate the Chinese New Year and the Lantern Festival.

Dignitaries such as Wang Jianzhou, Consul General of China to Durban and Councillor Fawzia Peer, eThekwini Municipality Deputy Mayor, were in attendance at the event.

Speaking at the concert, Dr Eddie Chaobo FU, Co-Dean of the DUT Confucius Institute, said the show featured a wide range of music from traditional Chinese and African to music from films and music such as Imagasy, Dragon Dance, Jasmine Flower, Ming Court, Heavenly Road(Skyway) and Blessings, to name but a few. “This concert effectively illustrated the culture of China and South Africa in such an artistic and magical way, impressing the audience with the rich Chinese folk arts and versatile Chinese and South African cultural voices”, said Dr FU.
