Supporting the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence

The Durban University of Technology’s Gender Forum recently hosted a march supporting the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children at the ML Sultan Campus.

The aim was to raise awareness and to make a collective statement as part of the DUT community about woman and child abuse as well as commemorate the 24th anniversary of the launch of the campaign.

“I think government has lots to do to support women,” said DUT Gender Forum Chairperson, Dr Rosaline Govender. “Government needs to develop more effective structures to support women and children who are being abused. There needs to be more empowerment programmes in place that can educate society and this includes both men and women. Many women stay in abusive relationships because of financial problems and social reasons. If government makes more support structures available to support more women, they will leave abusive relationships,” she said.

Lindiwe Mtsweli, an EXCO member of the DUT Gender Forum, said universities must also work towards helping the country overcome gender based violence.

Zenande Hlubi , DUT second year Public Management student said she learned a lot at the march, adding that she is proud that DUT was also participating in the initiative. She said all DUT students needed to support the fight against gender based violence.
