DUT Hosts ICT Conference to Explore Innovative Solutions

The Durban University of Technology (DUT), Faculty of Accounting and Informatics hosted the Information Communication Technology and Society(ICTAS) Conference on 08 and 09 March 2018 in Durban.

This was the second ICTAS Conference. The conference is technically sponsored by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and all papers are submitted to IEEE Explore. The overarching objective of this conference is to provide a forum for researchers in both academia and industry to share their latest research contributions towards promoting networking of people, exchange of innovative ideas and more importantly using ICT to find innovative solutions to the issues affecting human well-being. Consequently, based on this priority, the main theme of this conference was ICT and Society.

The conference has shown significant growth. In 2017 a total of 61 papers were received and 25 papers were accepted and presented. The rejection rate was 50%. As per a typical conference, a few accepted papers were not presented.

This year, 2018, 84 submissions were received. The review panel, consisting of 46 international experts within the field, reviewed each submission. On average 2.1, program committee members reviewed each paper. Thirty-nine papers were accepted and presented. The rejection rate increased to 54%. This is indicative of growth for the ICTAS conference, as there was an increase in the number of submissions and improvement in terms of the quality of submissions.

The conference hosted esteemed international academics including Professor Anthony T.S. Ho (the University of Surrey, Guildford in the United Kingdom), Professor S.J. Fong, (the University of Macau in China) and Professor T.V. Prabhakar (Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in India). All these erudite professors also addressed the conference.

The keynote speakers, Prof Ho, Prof Prabhakar and Prof Fong, presented guest lectures to DUT students prior to the conference.

We would like to thank supporters of this conference, Oracle, Computer Mania, Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), for their contributions and facilitating this conference.
