DUT Hosts International Maritime Conference

The Durban University of Technology is hosting the 23rd International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA) Conference at the Elangeni Hotel from 29 June to 03 July 2015.

On its 23rd Anniversary, the conference is being held in South Africa for the very first time. The Maritime Conference will be attended by representatives from Singapore, Slovenia, Germany, France, Poland, Turkey, India, China, Ghana, Kenya, Sweden and South Africa as well as Durban local schools such as Sithengile High School in Clermont and Zwelibanzi in uMlazi, to name but a few.

IMLA was first incepted in 1977 and had its first conference in June 1980. The conference offers a platform for lecturers, stakeholders, teachers and other interested parties from all over the world to discuss on sea related issues, exchange ideas and share each other’s experiences. The principal aim of IMLA is to promote contact and co-operation between maritime lecturers of all disciplines and to develop a body of professional expertise.

DUT’s Maritime Studies Department in the University’s Faculty of Applied Sciences currently offers a National Diploma in Maritime Studies. The Diploma allows students to either pursue a sea-going career as navigating officers or a shore-based one. The University is the only higher education institution in South Africa offering an undergraduate diploma that caters for the shore-based industry and services the marine engineering component of the National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.

The details of the event are as follows:
