DUT Midlands Students Applaud the “Missing Middle Campaign”

The Durban University of Technology Midlands students applauded and welcomed the Development and Alumni Relations’ “Fund the Missing Middle Campaign” which took place at the Riverside Campus on Friday, 04 August 2017.

The “Fund the Missing Middle Campaign” is an initiative aimed at providing support to students who are “too well off” to qualify for funding by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NFSAS), but are still “too poor” to afford their fees or any form of a commercial loan.

Addressing the students, Acting Director for the Development and Alumni Relations office Mr Zwakele Ngubane said such a campaign was one of the many initiatives that aimed to address students’ financial issues caused by the current economic difficulties.

“This campaign is an indication that we understand the financial difficulties faced by you and your parents; we don’t want to see any student dropping out from their studies because of funds. We will be doing more and we are also working extensively in raising funds to assist deserving students,” said Ngubane.

Adding to Ngubane’s message, SRC Project Officer Given Zulu said after the Fees Must Fall protest such campaigns were important to the University.

“This campaign is one of the many projects that are assisting in financial problems faced by students at DUT. Although it might not be the only solution, it’s a step forward and it is important that each one of us assist where we can,” said Zulu.

To emphasise the latter, Ngubane spoke of the new “Adopt a Student” component that has been added to the campaign. This (the component) requires students to register their profiles explaining why they should be funded and why they cannot afford to pay their fees. These profiles will then be made available to possible funders.

The DUT community (staff and students) is urged to make contributions (starting from as little as R10.00) towards the “Fund the Missing Middle Campaign”, “One Meal a Day” and other bursary funds at the Development and Alumni Relations office.
