DUT SRC Secretary Elected Into USSA NEC

DUT SRC Secretary Elected Into USSA NEC

Menzi Ngcobo, DUT SRC Secretary, was recently elected into the University Sports South Africa (USSA) national executive committee (NEC).

In May this year (2015), Ngcobo was elected as the 2015 G20 Youth Summit Committee Secretary. Ngcobo attended and participated in the G20 10th International Youth Forum which was held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. The G20 Youth Summit is organised annually by the Swiss G200 Youth Forum. The Youth Forum has been recorded as the largest international event organised for young leaders from around 200 countries in 2015. More than 500 students, academics, young leaders and business leaders in the world took part in the event.

Sinegugu Ndlovu, DUT Communications Manager, caught up with Ngcobo to chat about his latest appointment.

Sinegugu: Tell us about how you were elected into the University Sports South Africa NEC?
Menzi: I got elected at the USSA Special General Meeting on 10 October 2015 at the CSIR Convention Centre in Pretoria, Gauteng, where I was representing DUT. I got nominated by the University of Venda to stand for election after the USSA Council passed a motion to allow the elections to take place due to a constitutional oversight.

Sinegugu: Previously, what has been your involvement with University Sports South Africa?
Menzi: I was a member of the USSA National Student Forum- again representing DUT and KwaZulu-Natal- as the head of the Student Forum in KZN. My role was to improve student participation in sports, help create awareness on new sports trends and maximise opportunities in universities that do not prioritise the funding of sports.

Sinegugu: How you feel about your latest appointment?
Menzi: It has to be one of my biggest highlights this year (2015). While 2015 has been filled with a catalogue of highlights, being appointed into the USSA NEC stands head and shoulders above everything I have done this year because sports is very close to my heart.

Sinegugu: What will be your role in the USSA as a member of its NEC?
Menzi: I will be a National Assessor responsible for transformation and policy development the organisation’s national teams as well as previously disadvantaged institutions who have not invested in sports facilities and sports development programmes in the past due to a scarcity of funds and direct sports sponsorship.

Sinegugu: Are there any urgent plans/focus areas that you intend to address with regards to your role as NEC member?
Menzi: I am really passionate about sports and student participation, not only in recreational sports but in competitive and high performance sports as well. I see this as a way that universities can put themselves out there and attract some of the most talented young people in the country while contributing to the development of sports in South Africa.

Sinegugu: How do you see your membership in the USSA NEC helping DUT in terms of sports?
Menzi: This is a first for DUT. I don’t think we have had a student who has been elected onto the NEC of the governing body of university sports. So I really hope DUT can use me to help develop sound sports development policies which can see us competitively participate in multi-coded sports which have national television coverage. This would showcase the immense sporting talent that our University has to offer and allow the public to see DUT in good light and as a university of choice.

Sinegugu: Would you like to add anything that you feel is important to mention?
Menzi: I would like to congratulate the DUT Durban and Midlands women’s soccer teams for qualifying for the national club champions in Bloemfontien in December (2015). They continue to make us proud as DUT students.
