DUT Students & Exhibitors Views on World Of Work (WoW)

DUT Students & Exhibitors Views on World Of Work (WoW)

Every year the Durban University of Technology Co-operative Education department invites various organisations from different industries to exhibit at the World of Work. The two-day event is not only attended by exhibitors but hundreds of DUT students attend WoW.

Sandile Lukhozi from DUT Communications at the Division of Corporate Affairs attended the opening of WoW career exhibition and engaged with some exhibitors and students to find out their views on this two-day event. This is what they (students/exhibitors) had to say about WoW.

Callen Miller, 24, B-Tech student, Jewellery Design and Manufacture

Callen MillerI am very excited to be here today because it is nice to be able to showcase what the students have been working on. It is nice to get other people’s opinions on your work and see what they want to buy and what they are interested in. Overall, it is a learning curve for students, for us, to see what the market is like.  Regarding the work that we are exhibiting, we have a table of Jewellery pieces that different students have made. It is mainly for private work that they have done after hours. I have different pieces of jewellery from different students that are hoping to either sell or get an interest or find out if their work is ready for the market.

Lungile Hlengwa, 23, Second Year, Public Relations Management student

I found out about this career exhibition after one of my friends told me about it and I Lungile Hlengwawanted to be part of it. Today, I am promoting Durban Weekend- a clothing brand which is based in Durban. As a company, we have numerous products under our company. We have t-shirts and dresses; we know people love our brand so we urge them to support us. Since there is a lot of people today, we decided to reduce our prices and we also offer a free cup as a token of appreciation. From this career exhibition, we hope to ensure that our brand gains popularity amongst DUT students.

Nhlakanipho Nkosi, 25, DUT Interior Design student

Nhlakanipho NkosiFor me to be here, I was approached by the faculty after they heard that I have started my own company. Basically, as SINN Creatives Studio, we design everything from scratch. We do business cards, postal cards, logo design, and CVs. We have also done banners, media wall banners and we also do interior brander for 3D spaces where you have to create a conceptual space of the non-existing to make it realistic. In future, we want to have our own app where we do something like audio visual, where people can access my work easily through connected routers. Today, I hope to meet a minimum of 50 people who can come here to consult and ask about the services that we do here.

Phumelele Khumalo, 28, DUT Alumni, National Diploma in Management

Phumelele KhumaloI believe that this opportunity [World of Work] is there to provide students with information on what it is like to be in the industry. Today, I am here to advertise hair growth and skin care products a company called Get2Natural.  We are encouraging men and women to embrace their natural beauty. We are helping women to regain their confidence by appreciating their natural hair. We are offering them cost-effective products that work, which help them grow back their hairline.

Thabisa Makhanya, 22, Third Year, Fashion and Textile student

Thabisa MakhanyaI am sent by the Fashion department at DUT. We are exhibiting work that has been made by students from the first year to the third year. This is more of a pop-up shop for us because we are selling products that students have made.

Zamabomvu Magushu (Radio-DUT), 22, Third Year, Public Relations Management student

Zamabomvu MagushuAs a radio station, we hope to ensure that more students know about us since we are a platform that caters to the students’ talent.  Whether you are an artist, whether you want to be a presenter, whether you want to be an intern, Radio-DUT is a valuable part of this university. We hope to build a relationship with our students and different departments on our campuses. I feel like this exhibition is a great way to showcase all the different departments we have here at DUT. A place like this help you to explore other departments and get to know about them.
