DUT Vice-Chancellor Urges Unity in Skills Training

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Thandwa Mthembu emphasised the importance of engagements between industry, government and universities in order to improve youth skills during his welcome speech at the World of Work (WoW) gala dinner held on Tuesday, 1 August 2017 at the University’s Ritson Exam Hall.

According to Professor Mthembu, the success of a country is largely dependent on solid engagements and relationships between the aforementioned partners.
“The importance of engagement does not only affect the lives of our graduates but it also makes an impact to their families. We really appreciate your presence and you must know you have a partner in DUT,” he said.
Attending the dinner were representatives of companies who are exhibiting at WoW. The event is intended to be a networking session between these different stakeholders and the University.

Referring to the overall impact of WoW, Prof Mthembu said there was a need to look into allowing students to spend more time on practical education as opposed to the theoretical aspect. “Research has revealed that students who come from a practical background with more skills than theory are likely to be employable,” he said.

WoW is organised annually by DUT’s Department of Cooperative Education and takes place over a period of two days, with a gala-dinner on the evening of the first day. Various companies, in sectors ranging from- among others- retail, municipalities, government, Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) and engineering exhibit at the event. These (companies) are potential employers of DUT students after graduation. Over the 20 years since its inception, many University students have immensely benefited from the two-day affair.
