EDUTAINMENT is PART OF FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE

The First Year Student Experience (FYSE) Games Day hosted by CELT on Friday, 11 August 2017 at the Ritson Exam Hall, was a fun-filled day where first year students learnt and made new friends.

CELT has designed various programmes aimed at assisting first year students to adapt to their new environment. These programmes vary from learning sessions to seminars facilitated by mentors/tutors that are senior students. The games day was also another way of not only having a fun day for students but it was also a platform for the students to get to know more about DUT.

Ntokozo Zulu, Residence Educational Programme coordinator at CELT, said the main objective for the FYSE games day was to emphasize the issue of balancing life, academics, University life and to also see what more can be done to accommodate first year students.

“Some the games tested the students adaption, how they have handled peer-pressure, how the change of lifestyle has affected their studies as compared to when they were in high school. Through these games we also aimed to identify challenges faced by first year students,” said Zulu.

As students participated in the different games, laughter, cheers and excitement filled the hall. When those who excelled and won at the different games received their prizes, a sense of pride was not only seen in them but in their newly made friends.

Prize winner Sanele Gumede, said he had never won anything in his life and the games day has casted a new light of luck on him. “The best thing about being at DUT is that my bad luck of losing out in competitions no longer exists. This is a day to remember for me and this library voucher will come in handy,” he said.

The prizes varied from library vouchers, tablets, goodie baskets, movie tickets and t-shirts to name but a few.
“It was humbling to see students from various faculties interacting with one another and even going to an extent where they teamed up to carry out the tasks that were given to them on various games. This event fulfilled our objectives and students really appreciated the prizes from our sponsors whom I would like to thank for their generous contributions,” added Zulu.

The various prizes were sponsored by the different DUT units and departments such as Corporate Affairs, office of the DVC: Academic and Learning, Office of the Director CELT, Department of Somatology, Rendezvous Restaurant, Maintenance and Design studio.
