About the department

The Department of Finance & Information Management is situated in the capital city of Kwazulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg. The department is located on the Riverside Campus and offers a variety of academic programmes, including Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting and Office Management & Technology.


Mission Statement of the department is to

  • Excel in teaching and learning.
  • Develop and promote technology transfer and research.
  • Engage and network with external stakeholders.


Programme Co-Ordinators

The department has 2 staff members who co-ordinate the two spheres of the academic programmes. Mrs Thompson co-ordinates the programmes in Accounting and Cost & Management Accounting, while Mrs Dongwe co-ordinates the programmes in Office Management & Technology.

Cost and Management Accounting

National Diploma: Cost and Management Accounting (full-time and part-time)


The National Diploma Cost and Management Accounting allows the learner to specialize in the discipline of Management Accounting, which is considered the principle discipline for Accountants in business. Historically more orientated toward manufacturing businesses, Management Accountants are now employed across a full spectrum of businesses, including service organizations and financial services organizations. Some exemptions are granted toward examinations of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

This qualification serves as the academic component for membership as an Accounting Technician with the South African Institute of Professional Accountants.

Bachelors Degree in Technology: Office Management & Technology (part-time only)


This qualification is intended for administrative officers at an intermediate level in all sectors of the economy. Qualifying learners will provide independent and competent management support in the form of business and information administration, demonstrating various administrative and communication skills, as well as elementary and/or advanced skills in any two of Legal, Personnel or Financial environments, which will enable them to plan and execute tasks creatively, professionally and efficiently in accordance with international standards in this fields. This diploma equips the learner with supervisory skills to work independently and still be an important member of the executive team. Graduates easily secure national and international administrative positions.
