Civil Engineering Midlands Handbook
Most Civil Engineering Technicians and Technologists are employed in industry in one of the two ‘traditional’ areas namely the Building industry or the Civil Engineering industry,and may be involved in planning, designing or constructing. Within each of these areas, Technicians and Engineers may be employed either in consulting offices, for a local authority or for a contractor.
National Diploma: Engineering - Civil
Entry Requirements
In addition to the general admission requirements as stated in the General Rules, the following minimum requirements(or their equivalent) shall apply :
- A Senior Certificate with the following minimum results:
MATHEMATICS - HG E or SG C
PHYSICAL SCIENCE - HG E or SG C
ENGLISH - PassIn addition, a learner must obtain a minimum score of 35 points in order to be conditionally accepted into a mainstream programme, while less than a total of 35 implies conditional acceptance into an Extended Programme.
SCORING SYSTEM : Using the table below, determine the scores associated with each matric subject result obtained, multiply the Mathematics and Physical Science scores by two (2) and add all the scores together to obtain a total. Preference will be given to technical subjects.
- Have obtained an N4 (see notes below) or equivalent Certificate with passes in four approved subjects (two of which must be Mathematics and Science) and have passed one of the official languages at least on First Language Standard Grade and the other official language at least on Second Language Standard Grade.
- Have a Senior Certificate and have passed all the subjects on the Engineering Extended Programme where such a course is available, in which case a credit will be granted for Computer Skills I, Communication Skills IA and Mathematics I.

Note on 2 above:
- A N4 subject pass of 50% or above shall be considered equivalent to a corresponding Senior Certificate or FET Certificate subject pass.
- All the N4 subjects must each be passed with at least 50%.
- Persons with N3 or NTC3 certificates will not be considered; nor will N3 or NTC3 subjects passes be accepted in place of Senior Certificate or FET Certificate subject passes.
- The number of students accepted each year will be determined by the growth policies of the University and of this department and where applicable, space constraints.
- Applicants may also be required to do a skills test to assess their potential success in the field of Civil Engineering.
Bachelor of Technology: Engineering - Civil
Entry Requirements
Every Candidate should have:
- Completed the requirements for the National Diploma: Engineering: Civil or the National Higher Diploma: Civil Engineering or have been granted conferment of status of one of these qualifications
- And completed a minimum of one year of appropriate experience in the desired field of specialization (this may include experience gained whilst undertaking experiential learning).
- Or students who do not have the required experience will be permitted to register immediately for the B.Tech provided they have obtained a 65% aggregate in the appropriate pre-requisite subjects for the chosen discipline;
