Get Circumcised, DUT Male Students Urged

Yesterday (30 July 2015), the Durban University of Technology, in partnership with DrumAid, held an awareness event where male students were encouraged to get medically circumcised.

The event was held at the University’s Ritson Campus car park.

Thobile Zulu, DUT HIV/AIDS Centre Manager centre, “Our main aim is to stop the unnecessary spread of HIV/AIDS. We are also here to tell these students to get circumcised. We are also saying that even if they have been circumcised, they should not stop using condoms in protecting themselves from sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies,” said Zulu, adding that the Centre is currently looking for more funds to run this programme several times a year and at other DUT campuses as well.

Mondli Mlabe, a second year Information Technology student said he was happy to attend the event and although he is scared of being medically circumcised, he would get the procedure. “I have been wishing to get circumcised for a while now,” said Mlabe.

The event was concluded by live performances from Durban’s hip-hop sensation Zakwe and Afro Soul.
