Information, Motivation and Entertainment for New DUT Students

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT), Central Housing Council (CHC) will host the inaugural Classic Night at the Fred Crookes Sport Centre, Steve Biko Campus on Friday,13 April 2018.

According to the CHC President, Andile Masuku, the Classic Night aims to welcome and empower first year DUT students residing in DUT residences with essential information. “The primary objective of this event is ease the anxiety of new students, so that they can feel welcomed and as part of the broader DUT community. It also aims to expose them to Student Services that are designed to assist them as they navigate their journey as students,” said Masuku.

Masuku said this event will feature presentations from student services, student housing, motivational talks and entertainment. “We are very excited to have Professor Nokuthula Sibiya, who is the Executive Dean for the Faculty of Health Sciences, as our Keynote Speaker because through this event we also aim to inspire new students to be ambitious and achieve their academic goals,” said Masuku.

Masuku said they are expecting more than 650 students to attend this event, and he encouraged all students residing in DUT residences, particularly first year students to attend and take advantage of this programme designed to empower students. He also added that transport will be arranged in all DUT residences.

Furthermore, he added that the Classic Night is one of their flagship events as CHC, which is a structure that advocates for the interests of students residing in DUT residences. “CHC Executive, which I lead as President, is elected annually by a congregation of all House Committees Chairpersons for DUT residences. Our mandate includes ensuring the smooth running of the individual House Committees and act as a medium of communication between House Committee, the SRC and residence administration,” explained Masuku.

Masuku also mentioned that CHC facilitates other programmes for students residing in DUT residences, including health awareness, social and welfare awareness, sports and recreation as well as academic support. “We would like to encourage students to engage with us through their House Committees on any matters pertaining to DUT residences because we are here to serve them,” said Masuku.
