In terms of the Immigration Amendment Act 19 of 2004, any international student coming to study in the Republic of South Africa must provide proof of medical cover registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act 131 of 1998.  This does not apply to those on an Asylum Seekers, Refugee or Diplomat visa.  You cannot register at DUT without providing the International Office with proof of medical aid registered under the abovementioned Act.  It is therefore compulsory for international students to have a South African medical aid, which must be paid for upfront on an annual basis for the duration of your studies.

Should you rely on sponsorship please ensure that you advise your sponsor of this requirement as soon as you obtain sponsorship or acceptance.  It is not sufficient for any student to produce a letter indicating medical cover sponsorship: the sponsor must organise payment for the required medical aid cover directly to the Medical Aid Company, separate from payment of the tuition fees.
