ISEA2018 Academic Symposium Explores Similarities Between Arts and Physics

Universities South Africa CEO, Prof Ahmed Bawa addressed delegates during day two of the ISEA2018 (International Symposium on Electronic Art) academic symposium on Tuesday, 26 June 2018 at Durban University of Technology’s City Campus.

The day consisted of five parallel sessions including presentations, peer-reviewed papers and panel discussions by artists and academics such as Prof Bawa, Miguel Carvalhais, Clarissa Ribeiro, John Paulo, Sara Gevurtz and many more.

Prof Bawa who is a Theoretical Physicist spoke about similarities between being an artist and physicist saying both apply similar rules like the – “Quest for Beauty, simplicity and symmetry and the art of quantum physics,” he said.

The DUT’s Arts and Design Digital Festival (DigiFest) which celebrates five years this year forms part of the academic aspect of ISEA 2018. A number of exhibitions, events, installations, walks, festivals and activities are currently taking place around the City under the theme of ‘Intersections’.

Delegates also enjoyed a variety of exhibitions at the KwaZulu-Natal Society of the Arts. The different exhibitions featured works by Brazil’s Fred Paulino, South Africa’s Melikhaya Noqamza and many others.
