Meet Dr John Volmink, Interim DUT Vice-Chancellor

This week (Tuesday, 03 May 2015), Dr John Volmink assumed his duties as acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal at DUT.

Dr Volmink’s appointment was effective as from 1 May 2016 for an initial period of three months and may be extended depending on when the permanent Vice-Chancellor and Principal assumes office. Dr Volmink succeeds Professor Ahmed Bawa who served at DUT since 2010.

Dr Volmink, who has served on the DUT Council, was born and raised in Cape Town. He started his academic career at the University of Western Cape, South Africa, and completed the PhD in Mathematics Education at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, in 1988. He also holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Physics.

Dr Volmink has 15 years of teaching experience and approximately 13 years of senior management experience. He has held the positions of Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Campus Vice-Principal at the then University of Natal and has had a number of ministerial appointments. He has also been centrally involved in curriculum reform in post-apartheid South Africa and has been asked by four education ministers to play a leading role in the transformation of education in the new South Africa. He has served for four years as the Chairperson of Umalusi Council, the statutory body that monitors and improves the quality of general and further education and training in South Africa. He has also served as CEO of the National Education Evaluation and Development Unit (NEEDU).
