Midlands DUT GCI Commemorates World Water Day

Enforcing the importance of preserving water and going green, The Midlands DUT Green Campus Initiative (GCI) team attended the 2017 World Water Day Summit, held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre (ICC), last month.

The theme for this year’s annual world water day was “Wastewater: The Untapped Resource” which was intended to highlight the plight of the global population still suffering from water and sanitation issues. The Midlands DUT Green Campus Initiative (GCI) team attended the summit in a bid to further enhance its knowledge on giving awareness to people about what waste water is and how it can be used now with the current global water crisis.

“It is vitally important for us as DUT GCI to engage with different stakeholders on the issue of water preservation. Such summits do not only guide us on how we should tackle the various issues surrounding the current global crisis where our climate is concerned,” said Ntokozo Dube, Midlands DUT GCI Co-Ordinator.

The summit also involved different thematic sessions where the DUT GCI team was divided into different groups sharing knowledge with key stakeholders of the summit. During these sessions, the focus was on issues such as wastewater education, sanitation, Municipal Waste Water, Research development and innovation planning for a secure future and benchmarking and performance of water services and safety.

“We found these thematic sessions very helpful, we were educated and gained various skills on how to enforce the idea of saving water and going green to our peers. Going to see the different exhibitions of various companies who have created innovative tools to help save water was our highlight of the entire summit,” added Dube.
