LANGUAGE AND TRANSLATION 

ND: Translation & Interpreting Practice

Purpose of this programme
The purpose of the qualification is to equip the people who are or will be in the language profession with the necessary skills to be competent in translation, interpreting, language editing and proofreading.

The qualifying learners will become translators and interpreters in a limited range of languages. Such learners will be competent in translation, language editing and proofreading various text types at an elementary stage, also will be able:

  • Apply Translation Theory in both source and target language
  • Perform Consecutive Interpreting in various contexts using the appropriate equipment
  • Perform Simultaneous Interpreting in various contexts using the appropriate equipment
  • Communicating in Sign Language
  • The qualified person may be able to register with the South African Translators’ Institute (SATI) or any other relevant body/association

Entrance Requirements
1. General Rule G7 applies. In addition, the minimum requirement for the programme is a Higher Grade (D symbol) pass in the first language, i.e. isiZulu or Standard Grade equivalent
2. A Higher Grade (D symbol) pass in the second language, i.e. English or a Standard Grade equivalent
3. Successfully complete with a total aggregate of 55% the following:
   (i)      A language proficiency test
   (ii))   An interview in the first language
   (iii))  An interview in the second language



ND: Language Practice

Purpose of this programme
The purpose of this qualification is to provide a professional approach and recognition to the people who work in the various fields of languages. Such people are referred to as language practitioners, and they are employed by companies or government departments. The qualification in Language Practice means that learners will be capable of:
  • performing professional communication functions effectively in at least two South African languages
  • organising, manage and facilitate professional communication activities in the community and in industry
  • communicating in an additional African or foreign language (where the option of such languages was offered)

Entrance Requirements
1. General Rule G7 applies. In addition, the minimum requirement for the programme is a Higher Grade (D symbol) pass in the first language, i.e. isiZulu or Standard Grade equivalent
2. A Higher Grade (D symbol) pass in the second language, i.e. English or a Standard Grade equivalent
3. Successfully complete with a total aggregate of 55% the following:
   (i)    A language proficiency test
   (ii)  An interview in the first language
   (iii) An interview in the second language



BTech: Language Practice

Purpose of this programme
The purpose of the qualification is to equip the learners who are or will be Language Practitioners with the necessary skills to be competent in languages (isiZulu and English) and literacy facilitation, language research, and lexicography.

Entrance Requirements
A National Diploma: Language Practice with at least a 60% pass in each of Language & Translation Practice III and General Language Dynamics III; or their equivalents. Also refer to G23 (a) (1) of the rule book for students.



BTech: Translation & Interpreting Practice

Purpose of this programme
The purpose of the qualification is to equip the learners who will become professional translators and interpreter in their specialized field. Such learners will be competent in translation, language editing and proof reading various text types and be able to perform consecutive and simultaneous interpreting in various contexts. The qualified learner may be able to register with the South African Translators’ Institute (SATI) or any other relevant body/association.

Entrance Requirements
A National Diploma: Translation and Interpreting Practice with at least a 60% pass in each of Translation Theory & Practice III and Interpreting Theory and Practice III; or their equivalents. Also refer to G23 (a) (1) of the rule book for students.
Students who do not meet the above requirements may be admitted at the discretion of the HOD.



MTech: Language Practice

Purpose of this programme
This is a Master of Technology degree with the thesis option. The duration for the study is the maximum of four years

Entrance Requirements
A Bachelor of Technology degree or its equivalent as well as requirements as stipulated in G24 (1) of the rule book for students.
Computer Assisted Language Teaching (CALT) Masters
B.Tech degree with language/s (or Communication) or its equivalent, 



CALT Masters (Coursework)

This Masters is aimed at providing a coursework option for the Masters in Language Practice. It focuses on the use of information and communication in language teaching.



DTech: Language Practice

Purpose of this programme
This is a Doctoral of Technology degree with the thesis. The duration for the study is the maximum of six years

Entrance Requirements
A Master of Technology degree or its equivalent as well as the requirements as stipulated in G25 (1) of the rule book for students.
