DUT: Architects Against Xenophobia paint wall to express solidarity with fellow foreign students

Media statement by Mr Wouter Gildenhuys, Head of Architectural Technology and Interior Design

First year students doing Architectural Technology and Interior Design at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) will be painting a wall to demonstrate their abhorrence of the violence against ‘foreigners’ and to express solidarity with fellow students, friends and families.

The Graffiti Activity entitled “Architects Against Xenophobia”, will take place today, 11 June 2008 at 10h30 on Steve Biko Campus. There is a ‘green’ wall in front of the S-Block next to the Library, and six First Years will decorate this wall with the words “Architects Against Xenophobia”.

“We have several ‘foreign’ students in our Department and not only is this an important public exercise, it demonstrates our abhorrence of the violence against ‘foreigners’ which swept our country of late, but I do believe it is particularly important that we express our solidarity with them (our students) and their families and friends,” says Mr Wouter Gildenhuys, Head of Architectural Technology and Interior Design.

All students, staff and the public are invited to join in the Graffiti Activity.
