DUT: Student leader lands a job at SABC

Media statement by Nomonde Mbadi, Executive Director of Corporate Affairs

Former student leader at the Durban University of Technology Mthunzi Gumede has landed a job at the SABC in Johannesburg. He is the producer of Kids News. The Kids news programme is broadcast every week day from 6h30 am on SABC1, Mzansi For Sho.

Born and educated in Durban, Gumede is armed with a National Diploma and a subsequent BTech degree in Journalism from the Durban University of Technology.

A social activist, Gumede has been actively involved in student politics, engaging the university on student issues. He has held different portfolios in student organisations, which include PRO and Durban Local Secretary of Student Representative Council, chairperson of Khasho Journalism Society, member of Black Management Forum, and Secretary of SASCO, and recently an organiser of the ANC Youth League.

His daily duties include identifying relevant, interesting, informative and educational news topics for children. He has to brainstorm and research story ideas, visualise the story and make it as appealing as possible for children, conduct field, archive and other research, conduct interviews with both adults and children, follow developments and keep abreast of news.

He also provides direction to cameraperson and video editor, establishes and maintain news networks and contacts and produces current affairs content in line with the SABC editorial code. He finds his work fascinating and he enjoys every bit of it.

His advice to fellow students: Never stop to pray and never stop to apply. Create friends and strengthen your networks with relevant people. Believe in yourself, you are the future and no one can stop you.
