Judge Vuka Tshabalala appointed new DUT Chancellor

The Durban University of Technology is proud to announce that former KwaZulu-Natal Judge President Vuka Tshabalala has been appointed as its Chancellor.

Judge Tshabalala’s appointment – effective April 1 2012 – follows Ela Gandhi’s term as Chancellor at DUT.

Alan Khan, Senior Director: Corporate Affairs at DUT said the University is honoured to have Judge Tshabalala installed as its third Chancellor. Mr Khan said Judge Tshabalala is an important part of the story that has shaped Durban, KZN and South Africa.

“We look forward to his guidance and expertise playing a meaningful role at DUT. Judge Tshabalala has been a mentor to so many influential South Africans over the decades and we are thrilled that he has the opportunity to continue to make a positive contribution to the lives of our staff and students at DUT”, said Mr Khan.

Judge Tshabalala was born in Orlando East and grew up in Durban.

He completed his matric at St Francis College, Mariannhill. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Fort Hare and his LLB at the then University of Natal (now University of KwaZulu-Natal).

History was made when Judge Tshabalala, who retired at the end of February last year, became KZN’s first black advocate, then the first black Deputy Judge President and finally, the Judge President in October 2000. Judge Tshabalala however had to triumph over racism and strong opposition from within legal ranks to succeed.

He has held leadership positions in business, sporting, education, and cultural organisations, including serving as a Vice President of the Natal Council of YMCAs and Vice Chairman of the Clermont Advisory Board.

Judge Tshabalala was widowed in 1986 and never remarried. He also lost a son to cancer. He has two surviving daughters and three sons.

DUT will hold Judge Tshabalala’s inauguration dinner as follows. This invitation is extended only to journalists, and RSVP is essential.

Date: Tuesday, 3 April 2012
Time: 6pm for 6.30pm
Venue: Exam Hall, Ritson Campus (entrance opposite Curries Fountain), Winterton Walk, DUT.
