MEDIA INVITE BY CASSIM VANKER, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LECTURER IN THE DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AT THE DURBAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

The Durban University of Technology’s Information Technology Department, in partnership with the University’s Enterprise Development Unit (EDU), will host its first GovJam Idealization event where ideas on solving social and governmental problems will be conceptualised.

GovJam Idealization is open to everyone interested in public service and who wants to add their ideas and perspectives, while learning more about how the world works.

The event, which will be held at Lab 5, DUT Ritson Campus, will commence on Wednesday, 17 June 2015, ending on Friday, 19 June 2015. The event will allow developers, students and academics the opportunity to collaborate intensively on software development projects revolving around the following themes:

– Improving government processes: e-Administration,
– Connecting citizens: e-Citizens and e-Service,
– Building external interactions: e-Society, and
– Applications for education: e-Education.

Students, developers and academics that have ideas for applications that fit into the above themes will pitch their ideas to the GovJam team. Teams will then vote and choose the best idea/s.

In a second event to be held in July 2015, teams will be given an opportunity to develop software solutions to their ideas.

Durban-based software development house Chillisoft, which has experience in the public sector, will also be involved in the event. The development house’s mentors will assist DUT students in putting ideas into practice by writing the software.
