Prof Ciulla Talks on Ethics and Leadership at Lecture

The invitation of Professor Joanne Ciulla to the Durban University of Technology (DUT) is an opportunity for DUT to draw on the internationally informed expertise, as the University navigates ways to develop graduates with ethical leadership attributes.

Ciulla is a Professor of Leadership Ethics and Research Director of the Institute for Ethical Leadership at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA. She visited DUT as a Fulbright specialist and as a guest of the Durban Leadership Initiative, a joint project of the International Centre of Nonviolence, DUT and ACCORD.
She delivered a public lecture on Ethical Leadership in the Contemporary World at the DUT Hotel School, Ritson Campus.

Speaking at the public lecture, DUT Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations, Prof Khehla Ndlovu said, “DUT long recognised that professionalism requires attention not just to the technical aspects of employment but seeing oneself as a leader and taking seriously the ethical dimensions of the profession.”

He said arising out of engagement amongst DUT staff and management, a set of graduate attributes have been developed such as self-awareness, leadership and ethics. He said the University had also spearheaded a couple of initiatives to achieve this goal like the Durban Leadership Initiative which was originally a separate non-profit organisation and is now an academic centre at DUT.

“Prof Ciulla’s visit also included engaging with DUT in all aspects of this work. We have a rare opportunity to draw on internationally informed expertise in shaping and reshaping our work in this area,” said Prof Ndlovu.
