Professor Thandwa Mthembu assumed the leadership reins as Vice-Chancellor and Principal at the Durban University of Technology on 01 October 2016. Prior to that, he was Vice-Chancellor and Principal at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) since 2007.
Prof Mthembu has also served as Vice-Principal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Partnerships and Advancement at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) as well as in senior and executive management positions at other South African universities.
Prof Mthembu has a PhD in Mathematics and has published mathematics papers in international journals and is co-author of a 100-page monograph entitled: Christoffel Functions and Orthogonal Polynomials for Erdõs Weights. Over the last 21 years he diversified his scholarly interests to include higher education governance and management, social transformation as well as public intellectualism.
Prof Mthembu is the immediate past Chair of the South African Technology Network (SATN) and has chaired several ministerial task teams/committees. He is the regional Chair (Southern Africa) of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP).
