Professor Theo Andrew qualified and worked, lectured, and consulted in the field of Electrical Engineering for over 23 years. Theo is a Fellow of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE), a learned society of over 5000 members. He served as its KZN Branch Chair and Honorary Vice-President and recently as its Executive Vice-President. He has served on several boards and professional forums.

He is currently the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic (Acting), at the Durban University of Technology, and is the immediate past Executive Dean of a similar faculty at the University of Johannesburg. Theo holds a PhD in the area of rural telecommunications planning from the University of Natal, and served as a specialist telecommunications reviewer for the National Research Foundation (NRF). He was the leader of the NRF funded Research Unit in ICT and Development, and the manager of the Telkom-Ericsson Centre of Excellence in Rural Telecommunications at the Durban Institute of Technology. His research interests include rural telecommunications, systems thinking, developmental engineering, and engineering education.

Professor Andrew’s scholarship activities are of international repute having undertaken research and study visits in several countries around the world, and having published in prestigious international journals and conference proceedings. He has also delivered invited plenary papers overseas and serves on the editorial board of two international journals. He continues to publish and supervise masters and doctoral candidates. Theo is a member of the International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS).
