Award winning designer and former Durban University of Technology Fashion and Textiles lecturer, Terrence Bray added another feather in his cap when he was announced as the Durban Designer of the Year 2017 at the Durban Fashion Fair (DFF) Recognition Awards evening, held at the Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) last weekend.

The fashion maestro graduated from the Fashion and Textile department in 1995 and in 1998 started his own clothing label, which has seen him dressing international celebrities such as Charlene, Her Serene Highness the Princess of Monaco.

Dedicated to his father, his DFF collection featured strong tailoring elements in bold black and white.
Over the years, Bray has been featured in a number of international magazines and was named “South African label to buy” by British Vogue. South African GQ voted him ‘most outstanding Men’s designer’ firmly cementing his position in the South African fashion industry.

Earlier this year, Bray was one of the seven invited designers who also showcased at the Vodacom Durban July.
The Best African collection went to West African fashion brand Quame Owusu which is owned by Ghanian designer, Samuel Owusu. This was his first showing on the DFF ramp.

EThekwini’s Business support programme manager, Sindi Shangase said, “This year’s theme, Dawn of the Arts, is about the reawakening of the creative industry and realisation of the arts as a lucrative business opportunity. It also recognises the different arts within our multi-talented city and shows how they can all inspire each other and work together,” added Shangase.
