TWO INTERNATIONAL AWARDS FOR DUT PUBLIC MANAGEMENT DOCTORAL STUDENT

TWO INTERNATIONAL AWARDS FOR DUT PUBLIC MANAGEMENT DOCTORAL STUDENT

Olayemi Bakre, a doctoral candidate at the Durban University of Technology’s Department of Public Management, has bagged two awards for his presentation called “Mitigating the vulnerability of subsistence farmers through groundwater optimisation.”

Bakre was the recipient of the sessions Best Presentation and Best Student award during the recent International Conference on Economics and Development in Colombia, South America. The awards were given to Bakre based on the content of his presentation, his ability to communicate effectively with the jury and his audience, the excellent quality of his presentation and the relevance of the presentation to economic development.

“My work offers a pragmatic and forward thinking approach through which rural development could be accelerated through the empowerment of subsistence farmers in rural communities of South Africa,” said Bakre. Presenting and choosing such a study was not much of a task for Bakre since his interests are deeply rooted in rural development and water resource management where he has written a couple of publications.  He feels that the imperativeness of rural developmental concerns cannot be overstressed. “I intend to initiate tailor-made rural developmental models amongst some poverty-stricken rural communities of South Africa and Africa as a whole. In consonance, developmental stakeholders across every spectrum should instigate and advocate a viable rural South Africa as an agenda to diversifying the economy, tackling inequality and enriching the lives of 16 million South Africans who reside in rural communities,” reiterated Bakre.
