UPDATE ON CAMPUS SECURITY

UPDATE ON CAMPUS SECURITY

Wednesday 5 October 2016

To all students and staff
DUT Durban and Midlands Centre

Dear students and colleagues

UPDATE ON CAMPUS SECURITY

Despite the attempted disruption of classes by a group of approximately 30 students at ML Sultan campus this morning, we have had a successful resumption of the academic programme in Durban and in Pietermaritzburg. As a result of the attempted disruption, police arrested six students who are currently in custody.

However, I still want to urge you to please be alert and to notify our campus protection team if you witness or have any knowledge of any criminal activity, or if you see any suspicious behaviour that may threaten your safety or the security of our campus. Please call our security line on 031 373 55 55. You can remain anonymous. If you are in Pietermaritzburg, you can dial 033 845 89 79.

Sadly, last night in Durban, there were some minor arson attacks. However, our campus protection team acted very quickly and these incidents were brought under control, before they could cause major damage to the University. Clearly, there is still a small element on campus who want to compromise the education of our students and to disrupt the academic programme. We must remain strong in the face of this criminal behaviour and we cannot allow a small group of arsonists to intimidate the entire University community.

Remember, if you have any knowledge of any criminal behaviour that is affecting our campus life, or have information that could help the police to apprehend the suspected arsonists, please call our security line on 031 373 55 55 or 033 845 8979.

Wishing you a safe and successful final term.

Sincerely

Executive Management Team
Durban University of Technology
