Urgent Notice to all staff and students

Urgent Notice to all staff and students

24 May 2017

The Durban University of Technology is very concerned about the recent criminal activities occurring around its campuses.

DUT’s Executive Management and the Campus Protection team are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of the DUT community. The Campus Protection team is also continuously engaging with the South African Police Services, including the police’s Crime Intelligent Unit, to curb any danger that could be detrimental to the well-being of all students and staff.

While engagements between DUT Campus Protection Services and SAPS continue, a team from DUT’s campus security has been assigned to patrol the areas around our campuses. Some of the members of the patrolling team can be spotted on foot while other security officers will be in vehicles, driving around the vicinity of our campuses.

DUT will continue to work hard to protect its community. Our students are urged to avoid travelling alone at any given hour, and they should not walk in isolated areas. If a student or staff member notices any suspicious or criminal activity, they must report it to the DUT Campus Protection team.

We want to remind our students and staff that any delay in reporting cases, makes it difficult for both the police and the DUT Campus Protection team to react and to respond to any issue that may arise.

The DUT Campus Protection office is situated at Gate 5, Steve Biko Road on the Steve Biko campus. Security Officers are stationed at all main gates on our seven campuses. We would like to remind our students and staff that if they feel threatened or witness any suspicious activity, they must contact DUT Campus Protection Services on 031 373 2181/82 in Durban, or 033 8458979 or 033 8458803 in Pietermaritzburg, or the South African Police Services on 10111.
