In the run up to Spring graduation, the Durban University of Technology had the pleasure of hosting a notable alumnus, and one we are very proud of at an event held at DUT’s City Campus.

DUT alumnus and local jazz legend, Theo Bophela, returned to City Campus after 18 years to perform together with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra on 31 August. Staff and students from the Faculty of Arts and Design were treated to a live performance of some of the greatest classics.

Bophela will celebrate his 80th birthday this year. He completed his music diploma at City Campus at the age of 62 and received 19 distinctions, 18 years ago. He said he was honoured to perform for students. He said: “At a very old age I decided to study because I believe that knowledge is power. I remember when I first came here looking to enroll, they asked if I wanted to enroll one of my kids and I said no, me. Find knowledge all the time, never feel that you know enough.”

Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design, Dr Kenneth Netshiombo said: “As a faculty, it is important for us to come together and warm our souls. Many students experienced a live orchestra for the first time, with performances of songs by Mozart, a prolific and influential composer. We are happy to have enriched Theo Bophela’s musical career, and are proud to have an alumnus return to us after so many years. Arts and Design is a close-knit faculty and we have so many amazing graduates out in industry!”

Bophela has more than 50 years of experience in the music industry and has shared the stage with local opera soloists Mthunzi Nokubeka and Busisiwe Shazi.
