DUT Partners in Electrifying KZN School

DUT Partners in Electrifying KZN School

Life will never be the same again for Saphumula Senior Secondary School, Umbumbulu, after the Durban University of Technology partnered in installing an energy technology station which is now aiding in electrifying the school.

The instillation of the Photovoltaic and Wind Hybrid System was initiated by DUT in conjunction with the IQRAA Trust, Muslim Community of South African, Technology Innovation Agency and Cato Ridge Electrical Construction.

The programme and partnership between all stakeholders was officially initiated by the University’s Energy Technology Station Manager, Dr Ian Lazarus, who thanked all stakeholders for their generosity and making sure the project was successfully implemented.

DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Ahmed Bawa said, “The project brings together foundation worlds, the business world, schools, communities. It brings all the partners together. Think of this project as something to learn from. This is an experimental project giving people the opportunity to learn about science and technology”.

The technology station offers subsidised services such as quality advisory services in energy efficiency and renewable energy, testing and analysis of solar energy systems, energy management solutions including energy metering, verification and monitoring.
The station also offers services such as Harmonic filtering, Web-based automatic meter reading solution to commercial and industrial clients, energy auditing of SMEs and training courses in Solar Thermal and Photovoltaics.

IQRAA Chairman, Mahmoud Baker, donated R360 000 in support of the initiative. He spoke about the importance of addressing inequalities in society. “Inequalities are everywhere; in schools, healthcare and so on. Albaraka bank wants to address and improve these inequalities and poverty”, he said.

Other key speakers in the event included Dr Huisen who owns Cato Ridge Electrical Construction. Dr Huisen ensured that all the electrical work was properly installed and connected. During the ceremony, he gave pupils a gripping speech on hard work and determination.
“This is the beginning of greater things,” said Saphumula Senior Secondary School Principal, Mr D B Mseleku. “We as the parents of learners at the school and as community members should ensure that there are no intruders at the school. We should also motivate our children to work hard. Electricity is no longer a stumbling block to the children’s education,” he said.
