A total of 5493 students will graduate at the Durban University of Technology’s April Graduation Ceremonies set to start tomorrow (April 9, 2014).
Honorary doctorates will be conferred to three individuals who have demonstrated excellence in their fields. These are feminist writer, literary figure and activist; Lauretta Gloria Ngcobo, distinguished playwright; Ronnie Govender and renowned environmental justice activist; Bobby Peek.
Ngcobo will receive an Honorary Doctor of Technology in Arts and Design in recognition of her contribution as a literary figure, her exceptional involvement during her political tenure, her leadership involving major enterprises as well as her significant ongoing community engagement efforts focussing on education, literacy and rural development.
Govender will also receive an Honorary Doctor of Technology in Arts and Design for his contribution to literature and the arts in general as well as his contribution to democracy, peace and justice in South Africa through theatre, while Peek will receive an Honorary Doctor of Technology in Health Sciences for his demonstration of exemplary leadership over the years in bringing to the fore environmental justice issues and its associated public health impacts at both local, national and international levels.
Jeanette England; Associate Director at auditing firm PwC, Mathuto Motumi; who heads the Office of the Deputy Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities as well as Paris Dlamini; Managing Director and Chairman of Ekuseni Personnel Consultant are some of the notable speakers at the upcoming ceremonies.
The Faculty of Accounting and Informatics will have a total of 1217 graduates, 361 under the Applied Sciences Faculty, 570 from the Arts and Design Faculty, 965 from the Engineering and the Built Environment Faculty, 655 from the Health Sciences Faculty and 1725 from the Faculty of Management Sciences.
A total of 3510 students will receive their National Diplomas, 1677 students will receive their Batchelor of Technology degrees, 41 students their Master of Technology degrees, 10 students their Doctor of Technology degrees, 149 students their Batchelor of Education Degrees, 52 students their Batchelor of Technology degrees (four year) and 54 students their National Certificates.
In terms of race, 4263 African, 915 Indian, 197 Whites, 109 Colours and 10 students classified as “other races” will graduate.
A total of 43 students with disabilities will graduate. Of those, 23 are female while and 20 are males.
In PMB, graduation ceremonies will be held at the Indumiso Hall, 15 FJ Sithole Road, Imbali, tomorrow (Wednesday, 09 April 2014), from 10h00 until after 16h00. The faculties of Arts and Design (Education), Accounting and Informatics (Office Management and Technology; Financial Accounting and Cost and Management Accounting), Engineering and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering) and Health Sciences (Nursing) will hold their graduation ceremonies on the day.
In Durban, graduation ceremonies will be held at the Fred Crookes Sport Centre, Steve Biko Campus, from Friday, 11 April 2014, to Wednesday, 16 April 2014.
