A total of 5493 students will graduate at the Durban University of Technology’s April Graduation Ceremonies set to start tomorrow (April 9, 2014).

Honorary doctorates will be conferred to three individuals who have demonstrated excellence in their fields. These are feminist writer, literary figure and activist; Lauretta Gloria Ngcobo, distinguished playwright; Ronnie Govender and renowned environmental justice activist; Bobby Peek.

Ngcobo will receive an Honorary Doctor of Technology in Arts and Design in recognition of her contribution as a literary figure, her exceptional involvement during her political tenure, her leadership involving major enterprises as well as her significant ongoing community engagement efforts focussing on education, literacy and rural development.

Govender will also receive an Honorary Doctor of Technology in Arts and Design for his contribution to literature and the arts in general as well as his contribution to democracy, peace and justice in South Africa through theatre, while Peek will receive an Honorary Doctor of Technology in Health Sciences for his demonstration of exemplary leadership over the years in bringing to the fore environmental justice issues and its associated public health impacts at both local, national and international levels.

Jeanette England; Associate Director at auditing firm PwC, Mathuto Motumi; who heads the Office of the Deputy Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities as well as Paris Dlamini; Managing Director and Chairman of Ekuseni Personnel Consultant are some of the notable speakers at the upcoming ceremonies.

The Faculty of Accounting and Informatics will have a total of 1217 graduates, 361 under the Applied Sciences Faculty, 570 from the Arts and Design Faculty, 965 from the Engineering and the Built Environment Faculty, 655 from the Health Sciences Faculty and 1725 from the Faculty of Management Sciences.

A total of 3510 students will receive their National Diplomas, 1677 students will receive their Batchelor of Technology degrees, 41 students their Master of Technology degrees, 10 students their Doctor of Technology degrees, 149 students their Batchelor of Education Degrees, 52 students their Batchelor of Technology degrees (four year) and 54 students their National Certificates.

In terms of race, 4263 African, 915 Indian, 197 Whites, 109 Colours and 10 students classified as “other races” will graduate.
A total of 43 students with disabilities will graduate. Of those, 23 are female while and 20 are males.

In PMB, graduation ceremonies will be held at the Indumiso Hall, 15 FJ Sithole Road, Imbali, tomorrow (Wednesday, 09 April 2014), from 10h00 until after 16h00. The faculties of Arts and Design (Education), Accounting and Informatics (Office Management and Technology; Financial Accounting and Cost and Management Accounting), Engineering and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering) and Health Sciences (Nursing) will hold their graduation ceremonies on the day.

In Durban, graduation ceremonies will be held at the Fred Crookes Sport Centre, Steve Biko Campus, from Friday, 11 April 2014, to Wednesday, 16 April 2014.

Graduation By Numbers

A total number of 4941 students will graduate at the Durban University of Technology this graduation season which kicks off tomorrow (Thursday April 11, 2013).

The graduation ceremonies will be held between the University’s Durban and Pietermaritzburg campuses. In PMB, the graduation ceremony will be held at the Indumiso Hall, Indumiso Campus, Imbali at 10h00, 13h00 and 16h00. Students graduating at this campus (PMB) will do so tomorrow (April 11, 2013).

In Durban, graduation ceremonies will be held at the Fred Crookes Sport Centre, Steve Biko Campus, from Monday April 15, 2013, to Friday April 19, 2013 at 09h00, 14h00 and 18h00.

Brand Pretorius, South African motor industry icon will be the only person to receive an honorary doctorate during this graduation. Pretorius will receive an Honorary Doctor of Technology Degree in Marketing in recognition of his excellent standing in the country’s motor industry as well as in the marketing and manufacturing sectors. The honorary doctorate, to be conferred on Tuesday April 16, 2013, is also in recognition of Pretorius’s longstanding record and ongoing significant commitment to education and literacy development in South Africa.

The Faculty of Accounting and Informatics will have a 1103 graduates including 1 DTech graduate and 4 MTech graduates. The Faculty of Management Sciences will have 1438 graduates. This includes 1 DTech graduate and 9 MTech graduates.

A total of 308 students will graduate under the Faculty of Applied Sciences, with 1 receiving a DTech qualification and 4 receiving MTech qualifications. The Faculty of Arts and Design will have 588 graduates, with 2 DTech graduates and 3 MTech graduates.

The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment will have a total number of 955 graduates, including 2 MTech graduates, while the Faculty of Health Sciences will have a total number of 549 graduates, with 1 DTech graduate and15 MTech graduates. Sixteen (16) students with disabilities will graduate from the institution.
