eLEARNING

CELT’s E-Learning unit supports the university’s aim to embed E-Learning as a core teaching and learning practice. E-Learning goes beyond LMS tools – it encompasses a blend of any technologies that work for practitioners and their students. The open education culture has become a determining factor determining recommendations and solutions.

Goals of E-Learning, amongst others are, to increase access to education; to bring flexibility to rigid systems and structures; and to renew redundant teaching methods that do not allow students opportunities to engage – outdated methods that do not tap into students’ internal resources that they utilise daily in conducting their lives outside of formal education settings.

Examples of available LMS tools are: digital content curation; student tracking; online assessments; mark distribution; announcements; blogging; webinars. Approaches and tools will be recommended according to the nature of a course, e.g. large classes of campus-based undergraduates, work-integrated learning, part-time or international post-graduate students.

Moodle

ITSS hosts Moodle but the administration of the system is done by eLearning Technical Support, the services include creating courses and enrolments of students and lecturers, upkeep of the server infrastructure, ingest and egress of data in raw formats and provision of analytical reports and statistics captured by the LMS. Help Desk assists users with login issues, enrolments and related matters. We currently have support divided into student support (tlzsupport@dut.ac.za) and academic support (pregalathann@dut.ac.za). Please note that more information can be obtained from https://elearning.dut.ac.za which is our dedicated support website.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams provides a collaborative space that holds the potential to make learning online personal, engaging and socially connected. Microsoft Teams provides a safe, interactive, productive and engaging learning environment via collaborative classrooms, online assessments and assignment submission, and professional learning communities to share content, and communicate online through virtual webinars and Team Meetings with both students and colleagues.
