SRC ENGAGES IN LEADERSHIP DEBRIEFING AND REFLECTION SESSION

The Student Governance and Development Unit at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently hosted a Student Representative Council (SRC) Debriefing Session at the Riverside Hotel on Saturday, 14 February 2026.

The session brought together SRC members to reflect on the registration period, share their experiences, and explore ways to strengthen teamwork and leadership moving forward.

Opening the session, Student Governance Officer Ms Hlengiwe Ngcobo from the Pietermaritzburg campus welcomed attendees and outlined the purpose of the engagement. She explained that the session provided SRC members with an opportunity to unpack their experiences following registration and reflect on how it had impacted them both personally and collectively.

“Today is about unpacking your experiences after registration, how you feel, how it has impacted you, and what needs to happen going forward as a team,” she said, encouraging members to engage openly and support one another.

The session was facilitated by Mr Tsepiso Thusi, a psychologist from DUT’s Student Counselling Unit, who works closely with the SRC throughout the year. He began by inviting members to introduce themselves to create a comfortable and open environment for discussion.

During the facilitation, Thusi guided the SRC on effective communication and emphasised the importance of accountability in leadership. He encouraged student leaders to use responsible language and to take ownership of their words, actions and emotions.

He highlighted that strong leadership begins with self-awareness and accountability, reminding the SRC that leaders must take responsibility in everything they do while communicating respectfully with others.

“A debrief is a space to support each other. My role is not to tell you what to do but to facilitate conversations and help you find solutions together,” he said.

Thusi further encouraged members to use “I” statements when expressing themselves, noting that this approach fosters trust, accountability and effective teamwork.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining balance and prioritising well-being while serving in leadership roles. He assured the SRC of continued support from the Student Counselling Unit at DUT, emphasising that effective leadership requires mental, physical and emotional wellness.

Closing the session, Manager for Student Governance and Development Mr Masiza Ngculu thanked participants for their active engagement and encouraged them to reflect on their personal and collective leadership goals. He urged the SRC to set clear and achievable targets for their term of office.

He commended the current SRC for managing their transition into office effectively and maintaining a positive working relationship with the university, encouraging them to continue supporting one another and prioritising their development as leaders and individuals.
