VOX POPS: What are your plans for 2021?
Rhofhiwa Sithari, third-year Advance Diploma in Information and Community Technology in Application Development
“Well, as much as the pandemic affected almost everything, more especially academics, most of us will have to grab opportunities available. My plans in the changed era are to get an online job and register for my postgraduate studies. I believe I’ve got time since most companies went digital and everything is done online. However, my plan is to utilise the available time to try to implement my own projects.
Lisakhanya Mpofu, third-year Library and Information Studies
“There is nothing normal about all this because things keep on changing. My number one priority is to pass all my modules this year. I think now that we know and understand how online learning works, things will be easier. I also want to stay consistent in running my business. Last thing on my priority list is getting my learner’s licence.”
Mlondi Mkhize, third-year Public Relations
“Completing the 2020 academic calendar through multi-modal learning has been one of the most challenging experiences in my educational journey. However, I am well- adjusted in the new normal and the plan is to embrace change. As a philanthropist, I plan on learning to digitalise Lesbian Gays Bio-sexual Transgender Questioning Intersex (LGBTQI) events this year. I am yet to unbox the gift of 2021 and aim to embrace every part of it.”
Mpumelelo Thango, third-year Civil Engineering
“Since I will be nishing the module that is left this semester, I plan on nding a job on the side. I saved during my December hustle, so I will use that money to buy a camera and pursue my passion of being a professional photographer. This year is all for experimentation in the hope that regulations will be lifted so I can get busy.”
COVID-19 has forced us to adjust in the new normal. EDGE reporter Nikiwe Sukazi conducted virtual interviews with Durban University of Technology (DUT) students to nd out what their plans are for 2021 in the new normal.
Sanele Khumalo, third-year Hospitality Management
“My plans for 2021 are to complete my diploma and nd my own feet in this profession as we all know that nowadays it is more important to have your own business than look for a job as the world is becoming more dif cult to live in.”
Yulenda Mkhehle, third-year Business Law
“This year I am waiting for the DUT Entrepreneur desk to nalise our contract for the property business I’m doing. Once that is nalised, I wish to buy a car and build a home. Academically, I aim to pass all my modules with distinctions so I can achieve cum laude.”
Alwande Mtshali, third-year Public Relations
“This year I plan to open a salon and create job opportunities by teaching other girls how to make money. I also plan to enter for Miss DUT 2021 and be crowned! I believe I stand a chance because I am con dent enough to stand out and speak for myself and for others in society.”
