13TH CIDB CONFERENCE EXPLORES THE POTENTIAL AND OBSTACLES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The Department of Construction Management and Quantity Surveying at the Durban University of technology ( DUT) proudly hosted the 13th Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Postgraduate Conference. The three day event was held at the International Conference Centre (ICC) from Wednesday, 12 to Friday, 14 February 2025.

Aimed at bridging the gap between academic inquiry and industry practice, The conference brought together academics from around the world, industry practitioners, public sector officials, and policymakers. It also served as a melting pot of ideas, fostering discussions and collaborations that lead to innovative solutions for the industry’s most pressing challenges.

Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment Acting Deputy Dean, Prefessor Katleho Moloi delivered an insightful welcome address, stating that DUT Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment is deeply committed to research, innovation, and capacity building in the construction and engineering sectors.

“Our mission aligns closely with the core objectives of the CIDB-fostering sustainable development, improving industry standards, and driving transformation in the built environment. Our work is also guided by DUT ENVISION2030, which focuses on innovation, sustainability, and societal transformation. Through our academic programmes, research initiatives, and industry partnerships, we strive to develop skilled professionals who will not only meet the demands of the construction sector but will also lead the way in sustainable and innovative solutions,” said Moloi.

Additionally, Moloi added that their commitment extends to supporting South Africa’s National Development Plan(NDP), which emphasises infrastructure development, job creation, and economic growth.

Speaking on behalf of CIDB, Board Chairperson, Mr Khulile Nzo commended DUT’s dedication to fostering academic excellence and industry collaboration. He then briefly explained the 2025 conference theme and how it should be used to address some of the industry obstacles.

“This year’s conference theme “exploring the potential and obstacles of Artificial Intelligence, Digitalisation, and Innovation within the South African Construction Industry” is particularly relevant to the CIDB’s newly adopted five-year strategy. The integration of digital technologies is no longer optional; it is a necessity for industry growth, competitiveness, and sustainability. Through the discussions research presented here, we hope to accelerate technological innovation and strengthen partnerships between academia and industry,” said Mr Nzo.

At the heart of the conference was a rigorous peer-review process where scholars evaluated each other’s work, enhancing research quality. Students presented their research papers and later participated in a panel discussion, led by academics and industry professionals.

The conference concluded with the closing remarks from Professor Molusiwa Ramabodu: Head Of Department in Construction Management & Quantity Surveying who extended words of appreciation to the attendees for their active participation and engagement throughout the conference proceedings.
