Introduction
Since the merger of the former M L Sultan Technikon and Technikon Natal, our workload has increased from approximately 10 million copies per annum to 15 million. We have continually upgraded our equipment to meet this capacity, as well as the advances in new printing technology. We operate fully networked, digital printing machines, including a full process colour machine.
Our staff component consists of nine full time staff – a Head of Department (HOD), three machine operators (networked), two machine operators (manual), two machines operators (finishing) and an administrative assistant dealing with queries, ITS data capturing and dispatching. Utilising these skills and technology we are able to offer a complete end-to-end printing process for individual jobs and move towards a print-on-demand concept which eliminates the need for the warehousing of bulk printed jobs.
Mission Statement
We will provide an excellent, technologically up-to-date printing service with the best possible turnaround time to DUT, with skilled staff and appropriate equipment for the application to a tertiary teaching institution.
The role and function of the Department
Our main functions are to produce quality study aids for DUT students, quality teaching aids for DUT academic staff and quality marketing aids for DoCA. Our workload is largely driven by the seasonal demands of DUT’s calendar.
What services does the Printing Department offer…
The printing of study aids such as study guides, practical manuals, student notes and log books, administrative forms (eg. financial aid application forms, purchase requisitions, etc.), booklets, newsletters, brochures, business cards, transparencies, posters, labels. Finishing facilities include collating, stapling, numbering, folding, punching, padding and binding (hard cover, soft cover, wraparound and ring binding).
