Bio: Ashika Naicker is an Associate Professor and HOD in the Department of Food and Nutrition with 25 years of experience in higher education. She is a registered Nutritionist with a PhD in Nutrition and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University, TH Chan School of Public Health. She is the recipient of a number of research grants and has many international collaborations in research and teaching and learning. . Senior Lecturer: Dr. Heleen Grobbelaar Tel: 031 373 2328 Email: heleeng@dut.ac.za Qualification & Institution: PhD: Food and Nutrition, Durban University of Technology Area of Expertise: Community Nutrition and Community Based Participatory Research . Short Bio: Heleen Grobbelaar’s doctoral research investigated the development of a framework for community engagement within a social justice paradigm. In her research, she takes a community based participatory research approach that encompasses the fields of participatory methodology, community engagement and community nutrition. Her specific interests are in food safety and hygiene practices in establishments and community nutrition. She is a board of trustees member of Child Welfare Durban and District and initiated various projects for the nutrition and food safety education of Child and Youth Care workers in Child and Youth Care Centres in the Durban and surrounding areas. . Lecturer: Dr. Onwaba Makanjana Tel: 031 373 2334 Email: onwabam@dut.ac.za Qualification & Institution: Phd in Food and Nutrition, Durban University of Technology Area of Expertise: Nutrition, malnutrition in children, food security . Short Bio: Dr Onwaba Makanjana is a lecturer in the department. She obtained her PhD in Food and Nutrition. Her research project entailed developing and testing the impact of an orange-fleshed sweet potato yoghurt on vitamin A and iron status of pre-school children. She is part of the team collaborating with UNIZULU on the study investigating the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on food consumption habits, food purchasing behaviour and food security status of the adult population in South Africa. She has presented at various conferences, she is mentoring an nGAP lecturer in the department and she is involved in post graduate research supervision. . Bio: Lisebo Mothepu is a lecturer with over 7 years of experience at Durban University of Technology and University of Zululand lecturing undergraduates and postgraduates both theory and practical’s subjects. She holds a Degree of Master of Applied Science in Food and Nutrition. She is aDoctor of Philosophy candidate in Food and Nutrition Security with advanced understanding in research under qualitative, quantitative and experimental research in rural areas. Career interests in relation to PhD are to develop advanced excellent problem-solving skills when it comes to development, validation and implementation of policies, projects and intervention when addressing food and nutrition insecurity status of people whether it is at national level, regional level or community level. . Short Bio: Sinenhlanhla Memela is currently a lecturer within the New Generation of Academics Programme. She graduated with a Masters’ degree in 2017 at the Durban University of Technology after completing research on ‘the anthropometric profile and food consumption patterns of an emerging middle-income community’. Sine was previously employed in the Department of Food and Nutrition (DUT) as a Research Assistant. Here she gained extensive expertise on the FoodFinder software. Prior to which, she also spent time working in the Fruit and Vegetable FMCG Wholesaler as a HACCP and Quality Control Officer. Sinenhlanhla has had opportunities to present to various audiences on the topic of food and nutrition at conferences, winter schools, organizational events, and communities. .
