Durban is South Africa’s second largest city and is known as Africa’s best-managed and the busiest container trade port on the African continent. It is also a major national and international tourism destination because of the city’s warm subtropical climate and its extensive beaches. Durban is a sophisticated cosmopolitan city, home to over 3.5 million citizens who offer an intriguing blend of cultures that celebrate the rich Zulu, Indian, and Western heritage of the KwaZulu-Natal Province. KwaZulu-Natal is the most populous province in South Africa, with almost 12 million citizens, the majority of whom are proudly Zulu. Chief Albert Luthuli, the first African Nobel Peace laureate and former President of the African National Congress lived in Groutville in northern KwaZulu Natal. Mahatma Gandhi, considered as the father of the India’s Independence Movement, also lived for twenty one years in South Africa, eleven of which were at the Phoenix Settlement in Inanda, where he developed the philosophy of Satyagraha. Within a stone’s throw of office blocks, theaters, shopping malls, and cafés is the Indian Ocean and Durban’s “Golden Mile” with its protected swimming beaches; great surfing and warm weather all year round. Durban is the warmest place to be in during South Africa’s winter months.
