Welcome to the International Centre of Nonviolence.

We are glad to have you here and share our work with you. As the International Centre of Nonviolence, we aim to research, study and contribute to peace. Through research, community engagements, teaching, and publications, we continuously contribute to an understanding of a nonviolent and peaceful world and reflect on and explore how this can be achieved. We are all about bridging the local with the global as we engage in partnerships in and beyond South Africa and collaborate with various stakeholders. The work of the Centre is particularly relevant where there continue to be many cases of violent conflict in the world, from the Russia and Ukraine war and escalating violence and deepening humanitarian situation in Sudan to the never-ending insecurity in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the crisis in Yemen, Libya and Syria. With questions around the effectiveness and utility of multilateral organizations, spaces to reflect on nonviolent alternatives and action have become a priority.

ICON’s success is driven by our team’s dedication, commitment, and shared vision for a peaceful, safe, secure world. Our work is shaped by the Sustainable Development Goals, the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the DUT’s Envision 2030 and how these intersect with peace, security and nonviolence. We hope our work will inspire you to commit to creating a safer and more peaceful world for everyone.
